The Future of the Web: Five Trends that are Catching Up

Since the evolution of the internet it has expanded by leaps and bounds and has made its place into common man’s life. It has up scaled communication and connectivity.

Meant originally to interconnect laboratories made for government research, the internet of today runs long and broad through all phases of human life and in all the sectors of the society, be it business, education, communication, infrastructure and more.

Evolvement of the Web

If we take a sneak peek back into a couple of decades we would know how little accessible internet was to people. But in course of the last 15 years, with the advancement of technology, its accessibility measured an increase from 569 million users in July 2002 to 3,739 million users in May 2017, which is almost 49.6 of the world population. The count shall never subside, rather reach an end wherein no man on earth can go without mastering the art of technical involvement.

Forecasts about the Future Web

There are projections about the future of the internet and the benefits which are to come along with it in the forthcoming years. The progress shall be witnessed and the following will be the initial step towards progress:

  • With the development of technology, data volumes are expected to increase 50 folds by 2020. Also, the internet traffic will continue to be heavier in advanced markets with higher per capita expenditure in and around the internet.
  • The hardware devices would mold themselves towards easier portability. Today’s qwerty keyboard will no longer be the only means of relating to the internet. A combination of voice recognition, biosecurity, gestural interfaces, touch screen versatility and other technologies will allow inputting data and command without keys.
  • In the future not only shall we gain strong built-in infrastructure in form of computerized devices but also in form of non-computerized devices like sofa, refrigerator, LED etc. Therefore it is estimated that 90 of the world population will have an access to the internet by 2020.

Easy Accessibility with Progressive Web Apps

The innovation in web designing is expected to reach new heights in the forthcoming years and that would surely bring an end to the era of mobile apps.

Instead, Progressive Web Apps are expected to occupy the home screens of most of the smartphones in the next few years.

A Progressive Web App is designed to give the user an app-like experience in a browser as it combines the best of web and more mobile apps with the help of latest technology.

It is estimated that about 20 of the users tend to neglect the idea of downloading an app to get the benefits associated with it. In such a scenario Progressive Web Apps are something users are turning towards.

A Progressive Web App eliminates the hassle of downloading, installing or updating a mobile application as it gives the users a quick access to the website online instantly. The Apps are also responsive in the sense that they are accessible via any browser regardless of what the device be – desktop, tablet or mobile.

The users are also free to upgrade the design of the Web App which can itself adjust to any screen size and device form. To keep the users engaged like mobile apps, they come with features like push notifications and a work-offline option.

A Progressive Web App is quick and easy to access when setting as the home screen in any browser.

It is likely that with Progressive Web Apps coming into the scenario, mobile apps shall have to face tough time occupying some space in the user’s smartphones.

A Real Hub for E-learning with WebRTC

Gone will be the days when one had to carry heavy bags loaded with books to the classroom. The internet in the future will redefine classroom learning and break stereotypes imbibed in the education system.

Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) an open framework for the web is popular across all growers and platforms such as google chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Android, iOS etc. It facilitates video conferencing, file, transferring, desktop sharing, chatting without any internal or external plugins.

The enthusiastic adoption of massive open online courses (MOOCs) in the education sector has made WebRTC a common phenomenon. It would facilitate globalized access to any number of Live videos from across the globe. There shall also be no limits to the number of streams a teacher can open.

This move shall ignite the digital learning movement and give students an access to online learning through chats and video conferencing.

Thus, Cloud Web Conferencing, a type of synchronous e-learning shall penetrate deep into the roots of education system wherein students would be able to carry on learning process on their own, and the online means shall act merely as the form of support.

Smart Devices to take off with IoT (Internet of Things)

Internet of Things is to be the future of web because it shall be the way in which business, government, and consumers interact with the physical world.

A close research and monitoring over the years by the Business Insiders Premium Research Service have resulted in building the researchers faith over the IoT.

To simplify the concept of the Internet of things one needs to understand that the future of the web shall remain a distant dream without smart devices being made available over period of time, These device shall not only include computerized devices such as mobiles, tablets, laptops etc. but also non-computerized devices such as television, refrigerators, sofas, watches and other such device within a common man’s range that can be used as a mode of connectivity. These devices can themselves create and share contents both publicly and privately.

Devices such as Google glass and biomass monitors in shoes and clothing are determined to be potentially abled devices that shall fuel the Internet of Things.

The analyst at BI Intelligence sorted through the reports that clearly disclose how the components of IoT system including its devices, analytics, network, and security would sink together to make it accessible to a wider range of people.

As a critical infrastructure gets build up, we expect the internet to become more than just a network of computers. IoT aims to make it a ‘network of devices’.

As for today, there are about 13.4 billion devices connected to the internet.

By 2020, it is expected to go up to a massive 38.5 billion. Therefore, with it, shall also multiply the number of internet users.

100 Connectivity with Google’s Project Loon

A world under one umbrella, where everything and everyone can be accessed within a wink of an eye. Though wireless broadband connectivity was a distant dream at the dawn of the cyber age, continuous development in the field of mass connectivity and information technology has made the world accessible at fingertips.

Most of the African countries are the ones that are included in the list of the countries with the least internet penetration in the world. Timor-Laste in the north of Australia counts among the countries with the least internet penetration with just 1 penetration rate along with Somalia, Congo, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Myanmar, and Ethiopia. Such huge inaccessibility is due to poor computer literacy, distorted infrastructure and the high cost of internet services there in those zones. To counter such issue and to make the internet accessible by all even at the most remote parts of the world, rigorous countermeasures taken day by day formally contributing to the development and social upliftment through connectivity knowledge.

Loon by Google, formally known as project X, perceives with a mission to provide wireless broadband access to every person especially those in rural areas with accessing medium just being a balloon.

Allowing balloons to float at 11 miles above the ground with a special antenna connected with it, the network works at a high-speed frequency.

The catch about this way of networking is that it is the best mode to access internet even when the area is hit by natural disasters.

Google in collaboration with National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration has made this loony idea of making the world around as an accessible and safer place.

And with a futuristic insight, it is very much believed that with a current growth rate of broadband demand, within the next 5 to 6 years, the Loon Project will be initiated all over the globe that will help the common man to access the world at his fingertips.

Similar initiatives such as the Internet for All aims at connecting about 60million new internet users by 2019.

Therefore internet connectivity on a greater scale is estimated to be the first landmark for the internet of tomorrow which is cheap and easily accessible for all.

Virtual Reality to take over Social Networking

Being ‘Virtually Real’ is soon to be a common experience with social networking sites in the near future. Virtual Reality is expected to fill in the gap between fantasy and reality.

Social networking sites shall not just be a medium for people to interact or communicate but shall evolve to be a gateway through which one shall have an access to a complete world of virtual reality. The video streaming experience shalt not just remain as a visual perception but will pave way for a 360-degree experience into some other world of virtual reality wherein you can invite friends or closed ones to have a person to person meet even from the far ends of the world.

These future predictions would have sounded ambiguous had the world largest social networking company Facebook not bought the worlds largest virtual reality giant, Oculus VR back in 2014.

The social app shall come with an add-on feature called Oculus Rift in creating a world of virtual reality wherein people shall choose their favorites among the different avatars available to them when entering into the virtual world. Not only that but also the user shall get an option of choosing a location that shall be as extravagant as the city of Paris or as busy as Frankfurt. The hardcore experience with virtual reality is expected to count as good as the real one.

These future projections about internet recognize the fact that internet shall no more be a medium for timely leisure or an information hub to people but shall be developed to be the part and parcel of every person’s life, an essential in the daily chores.
